Even groups of relatively high mid-CR enemies often either take damage too quickly for enough of them to survive to hit back. Groups of enemies are rarely at once logical and challenging: Say what you will about action economy and bounded accuracy, but as you approach 20th level it warps like spacetime around a black hole. At high level your pool of enemies to draw from is very thin, and you have to put in way more work to design encounters around groups of enemies that are at once logical and challenging. I've heard people say that once they're approaching 20th levels, PCs should be in the outer planes slaying gods, but the 5e monster manual is pretty light on gods to slay. Once a party approaches level 20, they're not going to be fighting 6 to 8 ancient dragons a day. Once you start approaching 20th level, though, the limits of that become apparent: You can easily run multiple encounters in a single dungeon with goblins, undead, beasts, orcs, and some more spicy monsters for good measure. This is why:Ĭombat is a nightmare to plan: Let's be honest: CR, is a deeply flawed system, but you can make it work by scaling encounters up or down, mixing up enemies, and sometimes throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks. It lasted years, was tremendous fun and took a lot of work, and I'm never going to do it again. I recently finished running a level 1 - 20 campaign, with about equal time spent across levels. Combat areas for every conceivable encounter. Collection of Podcasts, Vidcasts, and other D&D Multimedia for your consumption. Worldbuilding, Storybuilding, DM Discussion.
